A Land of Make-Believe
Who can forget Marion Jones? Seven years after she won gold medals in the Olympic games in Sydney, she was prosecuted by her own government for her role in an illegal steroids distribution ring. Sentenced to a jail term of six months for lying to federal prosecutors about her involvement, she is still currently in jail. After her admission of cheating she was stripped of every Olympic medal she ever won.
The reality of Jones's fate is not what I'm writing about today. I want to write about a land of make believe. Pretend for a moment that Jones went on to tell everyone that she cheated in the Olympics on film in a movie about her life. What if Jones went on to become a television reporter, and the mayor of her town gave a speech about her Olympic performance in which he bragged about her steroid use? And what if nobody cared? That would be a very interesting, very different world, wouldn't it?
We're Living In It
Consider for a moment the strange case of Chinese Olympic gymnast Yang Yun. Competing in the same games as Jones in Sydney, Yun won the bronze medal on the uneven bars. Soon thereafter, she was featured in a state sponsored documentary film, "Yang Yun: My Olympics". In this film she states that she competed as a 14-year-old at Sydney, two years underage. A confidential source forwarded me a copy of this film recently, and I have posted it at the Internet Archive. If Yang Yun's videotaped admission isn't enough, consider this jubilant speech still hosted (for now!) on the government web server sports.gov.cn. How old is this document? Annual copies have been saved by the Internet Archive dating back to 2002. The Google Translated version from 2002 is in agreement with the currently hosted version. This document is a transcript of a speech given 17 October 2000 by Fu Guoliang, the head of the Hunan Provincial Sports Bureau, to his colleagues. In addition to the automated translation, I've had this document inspected by multiple contacts who speak Chinese because of the translation subtlety I'm about to share with you.
体操运动员杨云实际年龄才14岁,在悉尼初试身手,
就引起体操界的注目并夺得一枚铜牌,前程不可限量。
Gymnast Yang Yun's real age was only 14. She triedtranslation courtesy Cindy
her hands in Sydney for the first time and attracted
the attention of the gymnastic community by winning
one bronze medal. Her future is limitless.
For those who are skeptical, please download this document straight from the government web server it's hosted on and translate it on your own. Google Translate and World Lingo do a pretty good job. The translation above is spot on: Guoliang is really saying real age, a differentiation one would not normally make. In fact, in the entire course of this speech, he never once uses the phrase "real age" when referring to the age of other gymnasts. Is it conspicuous that the phrase "real age" is used to qualify the age of a gymnast who competed under a government issued passport with a completely different birthday? Whether this distinction is made in order to emphasize that her actual age is different from the one on the passport she competed under, or in order to differentiate between the Chinese cultural traditions of "real age" vs. "virtual age", the point is clear: Yang Yun competed at fourteen years of age. How stunning is it that this is a point of pride to a government official?
In Plain Sight
Is this information a conspiracy? A big secret? Take a look at this message board listing posted by insiders within the Chinese gymnastics team:
这个时候是不是不太方便谈这些关于生日、年龄的事,
尤其是两大UB高手的,免得被间谍抓到把柄//
Talking about these birthday and age matters isn't
too convenient right now, especially for the two
big uneven bars aces [He Kexin and Yang Yilin],
to avoid having (the information) grabbed by spies.
Certainly someone thinks there's still a need for secrecy. Personally, I'm no longer so sure. It may come as a shock that every 'revelation' in this entry was uncovered months ago by Diane Pucin. Her article received the same reception from the IOC as my blog: a cacophony of silence. Certainly Marion Jones needed to be concerned about 'spies'. However I believe the Chinese gymnastics team need fear no such threat of justice.
Which Reality?
Taking a look at the two different experiences of Jones and Yang, it's easy to conclude that a double standard is being applied. As Sally Jenkins so deftly points out, the IOC once barred Greek sprinter Ekaterina Thanou from competition simply for a pattern of doping offenses, despite her having tested negative for the Games. Given the documents above, does the Chinese government have a history of age falsification in gymnastics? Can a reasonable person conclude that there is a pattern? And if so, how do we explain the double standard?
One Standard
The answer, of course, is that the IOC is much smarter than we are. They are applying a single standard: What The Government Says Is True. The US government declared Jones a cheater, and the IOC applied their standard and stripped her medals. The Chinese government maintains that their gymnasts are of age, and the IOC again applied their standard and agreed. It seems that someone at the IOC is a fan of great literature, and is making an exercise of applying the classics:
He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future.

Orwell also wrote, "Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two makes four."
Apparently, to the Chinese government, 2008 minus 1994 makes 16.
you have their entire bureaucracy working in kind to forge, cover up, and lie about any aspect needed.
no, its not even really forging these documents... they ARE the real deal... with custom ordered lies on them...
you need to be 107 years old? gimme 2 minutes and i'll have you a birth cert., Drivers License, SS Card, Passport, and H.S. Diploma.
what can you do? nothing, just wait until they eventually and "unofficially" confess like the girl from the '00 games did, at least that one was on tape!
It's a shame that this issue isn't given the full amount of attention it deserves. Some two weeks after the Olympics are over no one seems to care and it has been denied, swept under the carpet, and dismissed. I still hope for the truth to be revealed, but I'm losing faith in the justness of the world.
Nevertheless, "the squeaky wheel gets the oil", so keep it up!
So the Chinese government (one official) and the gymnast herself (Yang Yun) both say she was underage in 2000.
The IOC must be behind on their medal revocations because that seems to meet even their standards for cheating (both her bronze and the team bronze).
Which team moves up from fourth to third in the 2000 team standings if the Chinese were disqualified?
You guessed it! U.S.A.
comrade stryde, you are thought criminal! congratulations, wish there were more people like you, people who not afraid to think...

One way to make sure they don't forget about this is to keep reminding them of it, and reminding them of the fact that some of us out here won't be forgetting about it any time soon.
As for me, I plan on sending them a letter, with special attention paid to Ms Yang Yun. I may even include a digital copy of the video, just to be certain that they've seen it. I suggest you do the same. And in the meantime, keep talking about it, keep telling others, keep blogging about it, and don't let anyone forget.
Stryde, the "insider" you spoke of is in reality some Chinese netter who frequent a gymnast BBS on Baidu:
http://www.baidu.com/s?cl=3&wd=%C0%EE%B0%AE%D3%A4
You can find this guys profile by clicking on his avatar. There's absolutely no credibility in his "tin foil hat" spy comment made in jest.
As to Yang Yun, what does it have to do with He Kexin? In the interview Yang said she and her coach lied to the national team, nothing about the Chinese government changing her age.
Please take a closer look.
since you are so talented when it comes to finding the truth, i have found some information about sarah palin that makes me wonder if there is more.. however i do not know where/how to look. let me know what you think.. lizmonique@gmail.com ... http://www.zimbio.com/Bristol+Palin/articles/299/Timeline+Palin+Mystery+Pregnancy .. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=6848000 .. http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2008/08/did-i-say-daffyits-now-getting-sad.html ...
Some people are trying to change the subject. Don't let them, or everyone will fall to the entropy that is apathy. Notice how this has fallen off the headlines. I'm not sure Stryde Hax is enough of a force to keep this up, someone needs to enlist help now. The elephant in the room is rotting, and nobody knows what to do about it. I still can't believe Rogge is more concerned with Bolt's celebration than this pattern of deception. Shame on him, and his failure to uphold the Olympic standard. If we can't trust the Olympics, there is no hope for our future.
Wow Stryde, you really hit the jackpot with that "insider".
I took a closer look, and the netter's pseudonym "Li AiYin" means "I love kids" in Chinese.
Here he is on the gymnast BBS tradingn photos of female gynmasts:

And here Mr. Li is on another Baidu BBS, trading photos of Miss China contestants:

Earth to bobby fletcher: Yang Yun matters because it's tangible proof that the Chinese have done this before. Say whatever you will about cached documents, but when the girl's talking on camera and admitting her age was faked, there's really no way to pretend it didn't happen and that this is all some sort of American fabrication.
And the Chinese government wasn't involved with Yang Yun? Come on now. How do you think Yang Yun was able to compete internationally without a passport?
The FIG has her down as having a 1984 birth year, which means they viewed a passport with a 1984 birthdate when she was registered for the Olympics. Certainly you don't think she took a Sharpie and doctored her passport?
Yang Yun also had to get into Australia for the Olympics, which has notoriously strict immigration and visa laws. A fake passport would not have passed muster there, because Ozzie customs can AND DO cross-check the numbers to ensure they're legit.
Sooooo...Yang Yun had an official passport with a 1984 birthdate. Who issues passports? That would be the government.
Stryde, thank you for continuing to talk about this, blog about this, and find proof that something is seriously wrong here. The IOC needs to wake up.
I watch the news every day for something--anything--to come out on this. You are doing great work by bringing it all together. Where is the vaunted mainstream press in this matter? It ought to be asking the IOC daily about the progress of the investigation, and reporting back what the IOC says.
Where is the American Olympic committee on this? Or whomever is representing the American gymnastic team? How can they possibly accept the cheating?
You cannot believe the tennis match I've been going through on YouTube over the video I talked about earlier.
In the video, allegedly made in 2003, Jiang recites her age as 12 which would make her 17 in 2008.
Well, all the Chinese in the world are telling me "I have no proof" and the "passports are authentic" and "the video is proof." They have no concept that passports can and were falsified. They have no concept that any video can be spliced or an interviewee can lie.
I can never be 100% sure of how old these girls are. Mistakes can be made on documents.
Yet for the Chinese government to make mistakes on ages for these girls for three consecutive years only to "correct" it right before the games, and then to systematically erase evidence from the internet...
Big Brother is alive and well. Some people are in complete Crimestop mode.
I don't mean to resurrect this topic. I would have let it go if I hadn't received e-mails today. The IOC won't do $^!+ so I'm not going to waste energy.
What's new on the hacking front? What do you think of Google's new browser and that rival search engine Cuil?
Let us know what your new happenings are sometime. I'm sure you're exhausted from your last crusade.
Congrats on getting your story on FoxNews! I hope this discovery gets the well deserved coverage it needs!
Sir,
Again, this article was very interesting. Matter of fact, I've tried an addy given by a writer (Ronald, I believe). Received nothing. Was that addy one or two?
Thank you for uncovering the lies.

Todays Topic: Getting Away with It : )
Well lets see, we are about a month removed from the Greatest Crime in Modern Sports History (According to some of you fine people), and the apparent out come of your great search for truth and justice is: YOU HAVE WASTED YOUR TIME!!!
Maybe you did not attach enough insightful web-links to your patriotic "America is the Best" comments. When the blog host himself points out that most of your comments amount to little more than " GO USA, GO USA !!! " HuH Well, enough said on that..
As stated earlier, I am infact quite pleased for my little Chinese Cheaters. They put on one heck of a performance. In reviewing the medal ceremonies, I was unable to locate the part where the Chinese team was awarded their Gold Medals prior to the completion of the team event. Thus leading me to one conclusion, THEY EARNED THEIR GOLD MEDALS ON THE COMPETION FLOOR !!!, and looked damn good doing it.
It would appear that if most of you would be quite happy if the Chinese team had there medals stripped away, and that this would be the right message to send to the Chinese Governement. Has anyone (other than Me) taken the Chinese girls feelings into consideration. They are a happy group of young ladies who EARNED what they won. And I am happy for and proud of them. They are not their government, they should not be punished. Taking away their gold medals would be punishing them. They would be sad and heartbroken. This would be too steep a price to pay in my eyes. Their Happiness is more important than this ( X-Files Conspiracy Witch Hunt ).
I know mine is not the majority opinion. Thats Fine, I'll go it alone. Someone needs to stand along side these young ladies. Young ladies who if you truly stop and think about it, may not have the brightest of futures or best of living conditions. Some hope, Some sunshine has come into these girls lives. I do not believe it should be taken away from them, FOR ANY REASON.
Hello! What do you think about today's piece of news: hackers got into Sarah Palin's "personal" yahoo e-mail, which she was using for government business. Her yahoo accounts have now been deleted or frozen. Is it possible to still find out if her e-mails still exist, or recover some e-mails she might have deleted? Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Today's topic: Getting Away with It!!!
As stated in a previous comment that has somehow MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED...???
I will try and make this a "Short&Sweet" version of where I am coming from.
There are those of us who through the course of this years Olympics may have connected with the competitors. In my case it was the Chinese Womans/Little Girls Gymnastic Team. When people I "connect" with are attacked, I feel the need to defend them. I interperate most of the comments on this blog as "attacks" on people who's feelings I have grown to care about.
If there were someway to punish the Chinese Government for their disregard for the rules of fairplay without it affecting the young ladies themselves, then I would be all for it.
It appears that the goal of this blog and indeed the majority of the people who have commented on it is to HAVE THE MEDALS STRIPPED AWAY !!!
I do not know if this would discourage the Chinese Government from attempting future infractions, I HIGHLY DOUBT IT. I am fairly certain that "STRIPPING the MEDALS" would break the hearts of the 5 young ladies I have grown to care about. If I have to read again about how " It's just a machine over there " and " Their taken out of their homes at age 3 to become robots for their government " , I think I will PUKE!!!
These little girls are not CYBORGS, they have feelings and hopes and dreams just like the rest of us. These young ladies are not their government. Taking away the medals WOULD be punishing the girls themselves. They would be sad and heartbroken.
So, if we can all take a time out from our X-FILE's style witch-hunt for truth and justice, and remember that the feelings and futures of 5 innocent young ladies are at stake here, maybe I can convince you to consider them for just a second. Again, I HIGHLY DOUBT IT...
Stryde, your analogy comparing Yang Yun to Marion Jones is ridiculous. There is a massive difference between somebody being a couple years younger then your competition (allegedly) and somebody who pumps themselves full of steroids and HGH to make herself stronger and faster than her competition. For all of you on this board who are wondering why more people don't care about this, it's because people recognize that someone's age shouldn't dictate whether or not they can compete in a competion to see who is the BEST in the world. Imagine if a last years NFL championship was stripped away from the New York Giants because it was discovered that Eli Manning was too young to be in the league. There would be an outcry of anger because red-blooded Americans don't care how old you are - if you're good, you're good (e.g. Lebron, Kobe, KG). However, what we DO care about is the USA being beaten for gold medal. Now that's something we get upset about, and that's why you are on here reading this. And that's the real double standard! None of you would be on here reading this if the person who's age was in question was Shawn Johnson.
"There would be an outcry of anger because red-blooded Americans don't care how old you are - if you're good, you're good"
You should share your views with all the world class gymnasts who spent this Olympics watching the games on TV wishing they were old enough to compete.
My point exactly. I definitely do feel bad for all those "world class gymnasts who spent this Olympics watching the games on TV wishing they were old enough to compete". Yeah I'm sure it does suck...for all TWO of them.
